In an amazing range of shapes, colors and sizes, amphibians range from tiny tree frogs to toads the size of a dinner plate. Their songs are just as varied.
One of their most intriguing aspects is their ability to live partly in water, partly on land. This gives rise to the name of this class of vertebrates: amphi = both + bio = life.
They are easiest to spot at night, particularly when ‘talking’ to each other, often at deafening volume.
But even during the day, a sharp eye can find living jewels tucked away in tiny pools of water trapped in the bromeliads flourishing all over the Lajedo dos Beija-Flores hummingbird sanctuary. Hollow trunks and cracked branches are also favorite hiding places.
