Birds
Showy or discreet, melodious or raucous, these feathered marvels are the reason why the Lajedo dos Beija-Flores bird sanctuary was set up.
Endowed with notable biodiversity in this group, the Boa Nova region is home to around 460 avian species. Outstanding among them are:
- White-browed antpitta (Hylopezus ochroleucus)
- White-bibbed antbird (Hylopezus ochroleucus)
- Bahia spinetail (Synallaxis cinerea)
- Rio de Janeiro antbird (Cercomacra brasiliana) and
Grey-headed spinetail (Cranioleuca semicinerea).
Some 260 bird species have already been recorded and catalogued in the Lajedo dos Beija-Flores bird sanctuary and its surroundings.
They include two endangered species that are eagerly sought by birders visiting this region: the slender antbird (Rhopornis ardesiacous) and the hook-billed hermit (Glaucis dohrnii).
A favorite summertime visitor is the migratory ruby-topaz hummingbird (Chrysolampis mosquitus).
Talking about hummingbirds, it’s worth noting that nineteen of the 24 species recorded in the Boa Nova region are frequent visitors to the flower-filled gardens of the sanctuary. So stay alert – might be lucky enough to spot a new visitor!
