A charming little town some 440 kilometers (300 miles) south of Salvador, the Bahia State capital, Boa Nova welcomes visitors.
Just 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Vitória da Conquista, it is home to some 15,000 people. Thanks to its altitude of 1,120 meters (3,600 feet), its weather is as pleasant as the local population. Averaging out at 24°C (75°F), temperatures may drop to 12°C (54°F) in July (winter in the southern hemisphere.
Renowned internationally among ornithologists, Boa Nova is the best place in the world for observing the slender antbird (Rhopornis ardesiacus), which is endemic to the Liana Forest.
The slender antbird is the official symbol of this town, reflecting the efforts of its residents to preserve this endangered species.
In addition to birdwatchers, researchers and conservationists are attracted by a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as bromeliads and orchids that are endemic to this region. Tragically, many of them are today endangered.
Even brief trips through the Boa Nova municipality can range from dryland forests dotted with cacti and bromeliads to dense humid forests thick with tall trees. The abundant wildlife living here makes this entire region a paradise for nature-lovers.
For waterfall fans, the Serra da Ouricana range of hills hides around forty beautiful cascades, some dropping over 70 meters (300 feet).
